Flooding in Thailand is wreaking havoc on hard disk drive (HDD) manufacturers.  The consumer retail market will likely be hit hard by shortages and price increases, analysts say. Two industry research firms, IHS iSuppli and IDC, have predicted that the overall market shortage due to factory flooding in Thailand will reach 25% to 28% over the next six months.

The largest producer of hard drives, Western Digital is expected to be hit the hardest as IDC predicts that up to 75% of its production will be temporarily shut down, IDC said today.

IHS iSuppli said fourth quarter hard drive shipments will decline by 27.7% to 125 million units, from 173 million shipped in the third quarter. Users should expect to see price increases of some 10% over the third quarter. Toshiba and Western Digital have announced a temporary shutdown of Thailand factories.  Toshiba has reported water is 2 meters deep in its storage device plant and 3 meters deep in its semiconductor factory in Thailand.

In mathematics and the arts, two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio of the sum of the quantities to the larger quantity is equal to the ratio of the larger quantity to the smaller one. The golden ratio is an irrational mathematical constant, approximately 1.61803398874989. Other names frequently used for the golden ratio are the golden section (Latin: sectio aurea) and golden mean. Other terms encountered include extreme and mean ratio, medial sectiondivine proportiondivine section (Latin: sectio divina), golden proportiongolden cut, golden number, and mean of Phidias. In this article the golden ratio is denoted by the Greek lowercase letter phi (\varphi \,), while its reciprocal, 1/\varphi \, or \varphi^{-1} \,, is denoted by the uppercase variant Phi (\Phi\,).

Expressed algebraically:

 \frac{a+b}{a} = \frac{a}{b} \equiv \varphi\,.

This equation has one positive solution in the set of algebraic irrational numbers:

\varphi = \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2} = 1.61803\,39887\ldots.\,

At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing (No wonder iCloud logo seems so elegant and aesthetically pleasing). Mathematicians have studied the golden ratio because of its unique and interesting properties. The golden ratio is also used in the analysis of financial markets, in strategies such as Fibonacci retracement.

“Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works. The design of the Mac wasn’t what it looked like, although that was part of it. Primarily, it was how it worked. To design something really well, you have to get it. You have to really grok what it’s all about. It takes a passionate commitment to really thoroughly understand something, chew it up, not just quickly swallow it. Most people don’t take the time to do that.” – Steve Jobs (1955-2011)

We have just added a google places to our contact page (click here).  Please leave a review of our services.  Below is a tutorial on how to add this to your website or blog:

Open the google map you want to embed (google places). It could be a map you created under my maps tab, or a search for address, local business or driving directions.

Copy the HTML code from the textbox after clicking “Link to this page”. You can also customize the size of the map and preview it before embedding.

Paste the HTML code into your website or your blog editor.

Your page with the embedded map will look like this example. To learn more, see the Google Maps user guide.

A standard embed code looks something like this:

<iframe title=”YouTube video player” width=”640″ height=”510″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/5yle1USyhCY” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

To make the video autoplay when a person lands on your site you should add ‘?autoplay=1′ to the end of the URL.  For example:

<iframe title=”YouTube video player” width=”640″ height=”510″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/5yle1USyhCY?autoplay=1” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Apple today took administrative control of the iCloud.com domain less than a week before CEO Steve Jobs is to unveil his company’s new cloud-based service.

According to WHOIS searches Wednesday, Apple is now listed as the owner of the iCloud.com domain. As late as Tuesday, the domain was still registered to Swedish firm Xcerion, which had used the URL for its online file-storage service.

Reports that surfaced in late April said Apple paid Xcerion $4.5 million for the iCloud.com domain (inspiring MATRIXX to register OurCloudNetwork.com, which is currently for sale to any interested buyer ;) . Several weeks before those reports, Xcerion had changed the name of that service to CloudMe and registered a new domain, cloudme.com, to support it.

On Tuesday, Apple uncharacteristically identified the name “iCloud” as its “upcoming cloud services offering,” and said several executives, including Jobs, would talk about the service during the opening keynote at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next Monday, June 6.

Apple offered no details about the service other than its name in the short press release issued Tuesday.

NEWS FLASH: The lengthy legal warning at the bottom of corporate emails is LEGALLY TOOTHLESS.  These days, even the most innocuous messages – “Sure, ice cream at 6 sounds great” – sent from corporate email account are larded with dense legalese that is universally unread as the health advisories on beer bottles.  But the ominous warnings that you must obliterate, incinerate, and forget any email not intended for you don’t actually mean anything, according to legal experts.

“You have no obligation to obey the disclaimer if you decide to read a misdirected email, send it to your friend….”says Susan Lyon, a privacy and data security attorney for Perkins Coie.  “You don’t have to worry about that.”

The IRS requires that those involved in giving tax advice include certain legal disclaimers, but most others are EMPTY THREATS.  So why do companies bother?  The sad answer is that the verbiage relieves manager’s anxieties about how easily secrets can slip through the digital firewall, even though it does nothing to stop suck leaks.  But since everyone’s doing it, everyone will continue doing it.

Windows 8 Release Date

In: IT

26 May 2011

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said yesterday that Windows 8 will debut in 2012, although the company later called his comments a “misstatement.”

“We’re obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows,” Ballmer said, according to a transcript posted on Microsoft’s own press site. “Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year. We’ve done a lot in Windows 7 to improve customer satisfaction. We have a brand new user interface. We’ve added touch, and ink, and speech. And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8.
